It’s not the best photo in the world but this is a photo of Uncle Dink Hanes. I heard Garnet speak of him many times. Some memories include: Uncle Charlie and Uncle Dink together weighed about 400 lbs, Garnet said he had seen them all go swimming and Uncle Charlie and Uncle Dink would jump in and about splash all the water out before anyone else got to swim. Uncle Dink and Uncle Millard were both blacksmiths and Uncle Dink could control a horse by himself because he was so large himself

This photo brings to mind a lot of memories for me as I am sure it does for some of you. My grandfather grew tobacco. I never had to help prepare the plant bed but I pulled plants, set plants, and at the end of the year I helped strip the tobacco, my grandfather always insisted on tying my hands. A hand is basically a handful of tobacco, as you would get a strip the leaves from the stalk and had handful you would stop and use a leaf to tie the leaves together into a hand. My grandfather was very particular about the look of the hand so he always tied mine. This is the time of the year that those farmers still growing tobacco will cut it and put it in the barn to cure. If anyone else has memories of working in tobacco, especially with Garnet I would love to read them. -Cyndi

This is Robert (Bob) and Ada Belle Brandon Vance with their daughters Zona and Edna. They are Georgia’s grandparents. In the notes Buck shared with me he has this about Bob – “Bob Vance was named for his grandfathers, Thomas Vance and Robert Johns. He worked in timber and lumber most of his life and also farmed. He drove two and three team hitches in delivering lumber and logs. He worked for Walter Livingston and his operation on Long Creek and went with them to Westmoreland. He also worked in the planing mill in Westmoreland. While with the Livingstons on Long Creek he delivered the lumber to Hartsville. Several of the houses on Church Street were built with this lumber. In later life after, Ada died, he farmed with Duffy."

Bonnie put the photo taken of the grandchildren/great grandchildren in 1983 on the front page of the myfamily site and I realized it has been 25 years since that photo was taken. Carolyn had the idea of taking a studio photo of the children and grandchildren/great grandchildren for Mom’s birthday and she arranged to get everyone there. Mom was wondering where Timmy was going all cleaned up and finally he told her he was going to get a haircut(she nor I can remember if he actually got a haircut while he was out.) Now 25 years later those children are all grown up and we have added to the group, with our newest addition arriving today, Joshua Bradon(not sure of spelling). Hopefully we can all be together in November to update the photo.

Poppa Hanes is remembered as a quiet hard working man but occasionally he had his moments…

On his 50th birthday the family had planned a surprise party. Everyone was over at the house and the men took Poppa up to the barn so the women could sit out the party stuff. When Poppa walked into the house he took a little book out of his pocket and started reading off all the clues he had – he knew about the party all the time.

Reunion Update

Date: Saturday, November 29, 2008

Time:
10:00 am
The room will be open at 10am and Alana will be taking a group photo of everyone at around 11am. We will eat when the meal can be ready after the photo. Alana has offered to set up her equipment to take family group photos also. She has asked me to pass along that photos turn out better if everyone in the photo is in a solid muted color(stripes, plaids, loud colors don’t work well). I hope we can take lots of photos of different groups, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren etc. If you would like to check out Alana’s photography her website is www.portraitsbyalana.com.

Location: Christ United Methodist Church

Attendees:
Georgia has said that she would like to have all the family together once more so we are striving to have all of Garnet and Georgia's descendants in attendance. Unless someone gets married between now and then and if everyone is able to make it we are looking at 48 people(counting the two babies that are due between now and then.) Any other family that would like to attend is invited.and I have talked with Pat, Deamer and others so we could be looking at more than 48.

Details:
T
his is Bonnie and Randy's church and they have told us that there are plates, glasses, silverware available. We do need to provide some paper plates and cups for the children, or those like me who tend to be clumsy.

Joan has volunteered to bring a Honey Baked Ham, I will bake a Turkey but we probably need to have at least one more meat. Each family will provide vegetables, salads, desserts and/or drinks enough to feed their family.

Randy has said that there is a basketball court on the opposite end of the room from where we will be and we can set up TV's with movies to entertain the children.

Kristy is working on a power point presentation. Tim has volunteered to make a banner and I plan to have for each family a CD/DVD with a copy of the family genealogy, the memories book I compiled a few years ago, all the death certificates, marriage licenses and photos that I have(it looks like this could be several hundred photos).

Garden

Today, when fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables are plentiful and taken for granted, the home vegetable garden is regarded as something between a hobby and a luxury. But before the days of modern supermarkets the household vegetable garden an engine that helped many rural families pull through tough economic times. Green beans are a popular plant among home vegetable gardeners. The most commonly grown beans are the green, or snap, bean and the yellow, or wax, bean, which is a variety of the green bean. Pole beans grow 6 to 8 feet tall and require a trellis for support. They grow more slowly but produce more beans per plant.

These photos are of Pappa and Mammie Hanes in what look to be pole beans. An interesting note is that the photo of Mammy Hanes I found at Pat’s house in Loberta’s photos and the photo of Pappa was in the photos Deamer let me scan but they look to have been taken the same day.

The week of the Fourth

As I was thinking about what the Reunion Update would be for this week I decided nothing could be more appropriate than to honor the soldiers in the family. From the Revolutionary War to the War in Iraq Hanes family members have answered the call from Uncle Sam to defend the country. There were four Hanes brothers who served in the Revolutionary war along with other family members; James Ashlock and Hezekiah Blankenship among them. Many members from all the family lines fought in the Civil War for both sides. Just this week I was researching Bailey Hanes(Garnets second cousin once removed and discovered that he fought in the Spanish American War. On through the years the Hanes have served, Garnet was a soldier during WWII, Randy served in Vietnam and as recently as a 2003 Andrew was fighting in Iraq. This July 4th let’s remember our soldiers through the years and thank those that we are able for their service. Because of them we are able to say:

I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under god, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

Marriage Records

This weeks photos are of the marriage records for Garnet and Georgia's parents. The courthouse in Macon County Tennessee has burned multiple times, the last in 1908, but luckily both couples married after 1908 so we have these records.

Gully Washer

When Georgia was a young girl the family moved to Westmoreland and Carson and Edna ran the switchboard. There was a gully between the switchboard office and DD Watkins house. A bad storm came up and Carson, Georgia and Edna started to the Watkins(they had a storm cellar) the storm got so bad they took refuge under a bridge that went over the gulley, when the rain let up a little bit they started on to the Watkins house just after they left the gulley a large rush of water came down the gulley, and they just missed getting washed away.

We Thought She was Going to Kill Him

"One time that Carolyn remembers seeing Mom really angry at Dad("we thought she was going to kill him") involves the cousins. Dad had built a silage trench and filled it up with silage. Carolyn, Joan, Dot and Pat had jumped into the silage to pack it down until they were literally green, and Mom wasn't to happy"
from Memories Then and Now

Monday, April 28, 2008

From the book Memories Then and Now done in 1997
“Carolyn has never forgotten the whipping she got when Joan hit Randy with the coke bottle. Carolyn was about 8, Joan 6 and Randy 4 and they were outside cleaning the ditch in front of the house. Joan was out of the ditch and Randy was down in the ditch with the sack so Joan was throwing the bottles down to Randy and she accidentally hit him cutting his eye. Carolyn got the whipping because she was supposed to keep it from happening.”

With the newest additions this Thanksgiving there will be 49 of us, Mom, 5 children with spouses, 11 grandchildren with 7 spouses, 17 great grandchildren with two spouses and the first great great grandchild. -Cyndi

Grannie and Koti

Georgie and Koti on a trip (with Tim) to the Blue Ridge Special Scenic train in the Chattahoochee National Forest of Georgia.

Georgie with the Simmons girls

Georgie, Linda, and Ovie with Ruth in front. Linda, Ovie, and Ruth are daughters of Pernie Howser Simmons. They were Garnet's first cousins and their brother Terrell is the boy Georgie dated before she dated Garnet.

From the book Memories Then and Now 1993

Garnet and Georgia met at the home of Garnets aunt and uncle, who just happened to be the parents of the boy Mom was dating at the time, Terrell. Terrell was Garnets cousin and his actions brought Mom and Dad together. After that first meeting it was at a singing convention in Lafayette where they met again. Mom was there with Terrell but he decided he wanted to go to a movie with his fiends so he left her there alone. She met Garnet and spent the day with him before Terrell came back and took her home. Later she went to a ballgame with Terrell and he again took off with his friends so she spent the day with Garnet and let him take her home. One last time she went out with Terrell to the decoration day and he again spent the day with his friends swimming so she spent the day with Garnet. From then on it was her and Garnet with Terrell out of the picture. Terrell didn’t like this to well and boasted he could take Georgia away from Garnet but alas it was not to be.
